Fire broke out at 25 St. Clair Avenue West near Yonge Street around 9:20 a.m.
The club and a number of nearby buildings have been evacuated.
The winds are not helping.
The cause of the blaze has yet to be investigated but in a message to members, the chief operating officer says it appears the blaze started in the main lounge.
St. Clair Avenue is closed both directions at Yonge.
The St. Clair subway station is closed but trains are bypassing it.
The Badminton & Racquet Club of Toronto was founded in 1924 and had recently undergone renovations.
Prior to the B & R C, the building served as a storage facility for the Toronto & York Radial Railway and then the TTC, which says it dates back to the late 1800s.
