The classical music world is abuzz with news that a rare 1684 violin, made by Antonio Stradivari, is going to auction with an estimated bid price of $3.5 million.

Stradivarius violins from the 1680s were the first ones built on a larger, broader model and are considered suitable for concert or solo use.

Stradivari’s output included only about 1,000 instruments, with only 500 or so violins surviving today.  Most of them are either owned by musicians privately, in private collections or in museums.

The one for sale is said to be in excellent condition.
It goes to auction March 28th in London.
