TransCanada has received a presidential permit from the U.S. State Department that gives the company the green light to build the much-delayed project.
It had been blocked by President Obama on environmental grounds.
Despite thumbs up from President Donald Trump, experts say the proposal still faces a number of obstacles before construction could begin, including one from environmentalists, who still vow to block it.
In addition, TransCanada does not have deals with all the landowners in Nebraska on the proposed route nor a permit in that state.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomes the news, saying the government is ”very pleased” with the announcement.
”We have long known that getting our resources to market in safe and responsible ways is important for Canadian jobs, for Canadian economic growth.”
