The top Democrat on the Intelligence committee accused Moscow of mounting a campaign of ”propaganda on steroids” seeking to influence the U.S. presidential election.
Senator Mark Warner also listed several areas of concern about possible links to the Trump campaign.
He told the hearing ”we are seeking to determine if there is an actual fire, but so far there is a great, great deal of smoke.”
Panel chair, Republican Senator Richard Burr, says Russians are also trying to influence the outcomes of elections in Europe.
”I think it’s safe by everybody’s judgement that the Russians are actively involved in the French elections.”
The first round of the presidential election’s to be held next month.
Pledging co-operation, both Warner and Burr say they’d steer clear of politics in the panel’s probe of Russian meddling.
Earlier Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin again dismissed what he calls ”endless and groundless” accusations.   He also said he’s ready to meet with Trump at an upcoming Arctic summit.
