Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada fully supports what he called the United States’ “limited and focused action” in carrying out a missile strike on Syria in retaliation for this week’s chemical weapons attack.

In an online statement released this morning, Trudeau said Canada will continue to back diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis in the Middle Eastern country.

The prime minister also denounced Syrian President Bashar Assad’s use of chemical weapons, saying “these gruesome attacks cannot be permitted to continue operating with impunity.”

Trudeau joins other world leaders in support of the U.S. missile strike. The only exceptions are Russia, Iran and China.

American warships launched dozens of rockets at a military air base in central Syria after an apparent nerve-gas attack by the Bashar Assad government that killed scores of civilians including children. U.S. President Donald Trump explained the decision to news reporters in Palm Beach, Florida last night.

Syrian officials say the death toll from the U.S. missile strike is 7.
