Justin Trudeau presented Malala Yousafzai with a certificate officially making her an honorary Canadian citizen and then the 19-year-old Pakistani education activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner addressed a joint session of Parliament.

In his remarks welcoming her, Trudeau called here a ”trailblazer” and a ”model of kindness” who’s also ”impossibly humble.”

The youngest person to ever address Canadian MPPs and senators, Malala praised Canada for its commitment to helping refugees, advancing women’s rights and working for world peace.

”If Canada leads, the world will follow.”

Applause and standing ovations punctuated many of her remarks.

”I pray that you continue to open your homes, your hearts, to the world’s most defenceless children and families and I hope your neighbours will follow your example.”

Malala also condemned acts of terror perpetrated in the name of Islam, saying as soon as anyone commits violence in the name of her religion, ”you are not a Muslim any more.”
