Toronto based indigenous artist Shelley Niro is the winner of the 2017 Scotiabank Photography Award and the $50,000 that goes with it.
The 63 year old is a member of the Bay of Quinte Mohawk Nation, has work on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery in Ottawa, and in February was among the winners of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts.
The Scotiabank award carries a career survey exhibition at the Ryerson Image Centre during next year’s Contact Photography Festival and a monograph published by the prestigious German art book publisher Steidl.
