Ottawa says more businesses have applied to hire students through the Canada Summer Jobs program than last year.
42-thousand applications were received – and that comes after the deadline was extended by two weeks in January – because applications hadn’t met expectations.
But just how many jobs that will translate into: at not-for-profit organizations, small businesses with 50 or fewer employees – and public sector employers – won’t be known until the end of the year.
Employers pull-out of the program annually – despite being approved for funding – sometimes because they can’t recruit students – or they overestimate how many positions they need to fill.
