The firing of FBI Director James Comey is one reason Karim Baratov’s extradition case is dragging on.
The lawyer for the 22-year-old Ancaster man, one of four men accused of being involved a massive hack of Yahoo emails, says senior U.S. officials were occupied by Comey’s dismissal, plus Karim Baratov’s defence team is still waiting for disclosure of Washington’s allegations.
The U.S. allege he was a ”hacker-for-hire” with suspected Russian ties.
Lawyer Amedeo DiCarlo says they’re appealing the court’s decision to deny his client bail on the grounds he’s too much of a flight risk.
The bail review will be June 5 and on June a date will be set for for Baratov’s extradition hearing, a process that could take anywhere from 18-months to three-years if there are appeals.
Baratov is looking at 20 years in prison in the U.S. if convicted.
