Ontario is gearing up to announce an increase to the minimum wage tomorrow – as it rolls out details of major changes to the province’s labour laws.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says the move is necessary because the economy is doing well – but not everyone is seeing the effects in their everyday lives.
The minimum wage is currently $11.40 an hour – and it goes up each year with inflation – but unions have been calling for a $15 minimum wage.
The liberals will also be revealing plans to change provincial labour laws – following recommendations in a recent government-commissioned report.
The changes move closer to making work less precarious in Ontario – and are expected to include measures to make work schedules more predictable – and legislate equal pay for equal work – whether employees work full time or not.
