Former Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega has died in Panama at the age of 83.
The onetime U-S ally was ousted as Panama’s dictator by an American invasion in 1989.
Noriega served a 17-year drug sentence in the U.-S, three years in a French prison for money laundering, and the final years of his life in a Panamanian prison for the murder of political opponents during his regime.

Last year, doctors detected the rapid growth of a benign brain tumour, and this January, a court granted him house arrest to prepare for surgery.

Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela tweeted “the death of Manuel A. Noriega closes a chapter in our history.”
