He said the U.S. would either renegotiate its re-entry into the accord under different terms or take part in the creation of a whole new deal.
The Paris agreement was reached in 2015 and former secretary of state John Kerry, a co-signer at the U.N. the following year, says the president’s taken ”a self-destructive step” that puts the U.S. last.
Meanwhile, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says Canada’s ”deeply disappointed” with the decision.
The leaders of France, Germany and Italy say they regret the announcement but the accord cannot be renegotiated.
The add in a joint statement the course charted by the accord is ”irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated.”
