A warning that stroke rates are rising faster among younger Canadians than older Zoomers.
A just released report from Heart and Stroke (formerly known as the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada) says while the risk of stroke does increase with age, which is why 80 percent happen to those over 60, an increasing percentage are occurring among those between 20 and 59 – an 11% jump in a decade.
Dr. Patrice Lindsay with Heart and Stroke says Canadians aged 20 to 59 are in a much more fast-paced lifestyle with more pressures at work to excel; meaning longer hours, grabbing fast food on the way home and not making the time to exercise, resulting in higher blood pressure and more diabetes at a much younger age than before.
”What we’re seeing in this report is people in their 30s, 40s and 50s are really seeing significant increase in the number of strokes.”
