The former Alabama senator vowed to defend his honour ”against scurrilous and false allegations.”
He told the committee it was a ”detestable and appalling lie” to suggest he took part in or was aware of any collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Sessions also got hot under the collar denying there were problems related to his decision to recuse himself from the FBI’s investigation into Russian activities during the election.
Fired FBI director Jame Comey testified before the committee last week that he knew of reasons why it would be problematic for Sessions to remain involved in the FBI investigation, even before recusing himself.
When Democratic Senator Ron Wyden pressed Sessions for an answer, he raised his voice while insisting there were no such reasons.
Sessions said he recused himself from the Justice Department’s Russia probe only because of a regulation to require he do so since he was involved in the Trump campaign.
He maintains he never knew anything about the Russia investigation nor had any role in it.
