Social Planning Toronto has been studying the 2016 census data to get a clear picture of how many zoomers, 65 or older, are living in the city with an eye to identifying services for seniors.
In a report to be released today, the non-profit organization says in eight Toronto neighbourhoods, one in 4 people is a senior.  Executive director Sean Meagher says the city is going to have to act fast if it’s going to be able to handle its rapidly aging population.
His organization wants the city to increase the affordable recreation programs it offers to seniors – particularly in the areas where the demand is greatest – as well as develop and fund a long-term care and seniors services strategy.
According to the census numbers there has been a 13% cent increase in seniors in Toronto since 2011 which is an almost 34% jump from 1996.
The report also finds that 110 of Toronto’s 140 neighbourhoods have seen their seniors populations climb by more than 10 per cent over the last decade.
