HAVE YOUR SAY ON METROLINX PRIVACY POLICY

Metrolinx is reassessing its privacy procedures in the wake of criticism for sharing customer information with police.
At yesterday’s board meeting, the provincial transit agency decided to post the policy on line for public comment with a potentially revised or amended policy to be taken back to the board in September.
Former Ontario Privacy Commission Ann Covoukian, who is now executive director at Ryerson University’s Privacy and Big Data Institute, says making the complete switch from tokens to Presto by the end of the year makes the policy all the more critical.  She says Presto is not supposed to be a surveillance system that tracks all of the public’s activity.  She insists that if Metrolinx does provide personal information to police it be done only after a warrant has been issued.
In the past year Metrolinx has provided customer data to police 12 times.
