Omar Khadr says it’s a time for reconciliation.
The former Guantanamo Bay prisoner is not commenting on the financial settlement he’s reached in his lawsuit against the federal government for any role Canadian officials may have played in his mistreatment while in American military custody.
”This is not a time for celebration” but a time for ”reconciliation, remembrance, healing.”
And he hopes the government that accompanied the settlement will help him become a productive member of society.
”The good thing about this apology for me is that it’s going to restore a little bit of my reputation here in Canada.  And maybe that will give people an opportunity to give me a chance and think there might be more than what is just said (about me) in the media.”
Public Security Minister Ralph Goodale refuses to confirm the settlement’s worth $10.5-million — saying the government is bound by a confidentiality agreement.
Tory Leader Andrew Scheer strongly opposes it.
”If Omar Khadr is truly sorry for what he has done, that money would be given directly to the family of (U.S.) Sgt Speer.”
Khadr says he’s ”really sorry for their pain” and that causing the Speer family pain ”is not my intention.”
