Toronto Mayor John Tory is reaching out to the province and asking for a dedicated share of the money that comes in – after recreational marijuana becomes legal next year – on July first.
Tory has written to Premier Kathleen Wynne suggesting that city and provincial officials explore the possibility of a special tax on pot – similar to levies some American cities have imposed – to offset the increased costs Toronto will have to deal with including licensing, zoning by-laws and policing.
The feds will license and regulate marijuana growers – but it’ll be up to the provinces to decide how weed will be distributed and sold.
