If you have a flight planned to the U.S., expect it to take longer to get through a new round of “enhanced security measures”.

The new measures are required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security designed to thwart any potential terrorist activity.

They include enhanced overall passenger screening, heightened screening of personal electronic devices, increased security protocols around aircraft and in passenger areas, along with the use of advanced technology, expanded canine screening and the establishment of pre-clearance locations.

All electronic devices larger than a smartphone will have to be removed from protective casing and fully charged for potential inspection.

Both WestJet and Air Canada are advising passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before a scheduled departure to the U.S.

The new measures are required at some 280 airports around the world that offer flights to the U.S.
