COMEDIAN, ACTOR SHELLEY BERMAN DEAD AT 92

Shelley Berman, a stand-up comedian of the 1950s and 60s, who acted into his 80s, has died at the age of of 92 from complications of Alzheimer’s.

The Chicago native started out as an actor before moving into comedy, joining the city’s Compass Players revue – members of that group, including Berman, would eventually form the legendary improve group ‘Second City’.
He was the first comedian to win a Grammy Award – the inaugural Best Comedy Performance, Spoken Word in 1959 for his debut album ‘Inside Shelley Berman’.
It was the first comedy album to go gold with 500,000 copies sold, peaking at Number Two on the Billboard 200.
Along with his work in comedy, Berman appeared on Broadway and in films and television shows, including ”Peter Gunn,” ”Rawhide,” and ”The Twilight Zone”.
He was also nominated for a Emmy in 2008 as outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his work in an episode of ”Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
