The rules governing paramedics in Ontario are in the process of being overhauled and could result in patients with minor injuries, or those in mental distress, being taken to somewhere other than a hospital.
Toronto Paramedics appear to support the move. Brian Anett says this could save time and impact outcomes because it could result in less overcrowding in hospital’s emergency departments.
Beth Mitchell of the Canadian Mental Health Association agrees saying a hospital isn’t always the best option for someone in mental distress.
At the moment, the Ambulance Act only allow paramedics to take patients to hospitals.
