FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR GG LITERARY AWARDS

The 2017 list of finalists for the Governor General Book awards have been announced.  Almost 15 hundred titles were submitted for consideration in both English and French. In all 70 books have been selected as the best of the year.
The fiction nominees are, All the Beloved Ghosts by Alison MacLeod, Lost in September by Kathleen Winter, The Water Beetles by Michael Kaan, Uncertain Weights and Measures by Jocelyn Parr and We’ll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night by Joel Thomas Hynes
The other English Language nominees are:

Poetry:

All the Names Between by Julia McCarthy, On Not Losing My Father’s Ashes in the Flood by Richard Harrison, Selah by Nora Gould, Slow War by Benjamin Hertwig, and What the Soul Doesn’t Want by Lorna Crozier.

Drama:

1979 by Michael Healey, Indian Arm by Hiro Kanagawa, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Robert Chafe, The Virgin Trial by Kate Hennig and Within the Glass by Anna Chatterton.

Non-fiction:

All We Leave Behind by Carol Off, The Handover: How Bigwigs and Bureaucrats Transferred Canada Best Publisher and the Best Part of our Literary Heritage to a Foreign Multinational by Elaine Dewer, The Ways of Strangers: Encounters with the Islamic States by Graeme Wood., Where I Live Now: A Journey through Love and Loss to Healing and Hope by Sharon Bugtala and Where It Hurts by Sarah de Leeuw.

Young People’s Literature (Text):

Everything Beautiful is Not Ruined by Danielle Younge-Ullman,  Hit the Ground Running b y Allison Hughes. The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, The Way Back Home by Allan Stratton and Those Who Run the Sky by Avaiq Johnston

Young People’s Literature (Illustrated Books):

Short Stories for Little Monsters by Marie-Louise Gay, The Tragic Tale of the Great Auk by Jan Thornhill, Town Is by the Sea by Joanne Schwartz and Sydney Smith, When the Moon Comes by Pay Harbridge and When we Were Alone by David Alexander Robertson.

“GGBooks” is one of Canada’s longest-standing literary awards, and is among the country’s most diverse awards programs honouring works in seven categories and two official languages.
The winners will be announced by Governor General Julie Payette November 29th.
Each winner receives $25,000, .the publisher of the winning book receives $3,000.  Non-winning finalists each receive $1,000.
