Changes for obtaining Canadian citizenship take effect October 11.
(Colin Perkel / Canadian Press)
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen unveiled them in Brampton, saying they will make the path to join the ”Canadian family” easier.
”As a country that committed to the settlement and integration of newcomers successfully so they can restart their lives and make contributions to our society, we have to ensure the path to citizenship for permanent residents.”
As of October 11, only those between the ages of 18 to 54 will have to take and pass a knowledge test.
Previously, it was 14 to 64.
The number of years one must be physically in Canada before being eligible for citizenship will change to three out of five, from four out of six.
