Hamilton wants to be Juno Central.

The Steel City is bidding to host the 2019 Juno Awards – but it wants more than that – it wants to become the permanent home of the Canadian music event.

A city council committee agreed Wednesday to put in an offer that will be bolstered by the belief that Hamilton’s burgeoning arts community – offers a reason for the Junos to stay put in the city.

A spokeswoman for mayor Fred Eisenberger confirms that – even if the Junos don’t agree to those terms, the city wants to host the ceremony for at least three to five years in a row.

Council’s final vote on the bid issue – is scheduled for a meeting on October 11th.
Being a host city carries a number of tourism benefits with it. The Juno Awards are surrounded by roughly a full week of events at local venues – in addition to the Juno Cup hockey game – and several music education fundraisers.
Hamilton has a long history with the Junos.
The city hosted the awards show in 2015 – and the Junos settled in Hamilton five times between 1995 and 2001.

Next year’s show will be held in Vancouver.
