As the federal government begins unveiling its proposed tax reform proposals, Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s taking more heat over his personal wealth and whether it’s being ethically managed.

When he was named to cabinet, Morneau claimed he had told the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner about his holdings in human resources consulting giant Morneau-Shepell.

He expected to put them in a blind trust.

But in the wake of the escalating controversy, Morneau’s asked for a meeting with commissioner Mary Dawson, who said she told him a blind trust was not necessary.

She would not comment on Morneau’s holdings but explains the law requires that ”controlled assets” be placed in a blind trust, but that ”sometimes the asset is not directly held.”

The Conservatives are demanding the finance minister publicly reveal everything he’s submitted to the ethics watchdog since the Liberals took office.

The NDP has sent a letter to Dawson asking for a formal investigation.
