”This was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror.”
(Fox News)
The words of New York City mayor Bill de Blasio following a truck attack on a bike path near the rebuilt World Trade Centre that’s left at least eight dead and more than a dozen hurt.
Witnesses say the driver of the white pickup got out of the vehicle armed with what appeared to be a weapon in each hand.
He was shot by police and taken into custody.
Recovered at the scene – a pellet gun and paintball gun.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says while early in the investigation it appears the suspect acted alone, that there’s no evidence to suggest it was part of a wider plot.
Police Commissioner James O’Neill was asked if the 29-year-old suspect shouted ”allahu akbar,” which means ”God is great” in Arabic or something like it.
O’Neill says he did make a statement when he got out of the vehicle but did not elaborate.
The commissioner says the method of the attack and the statement enabled officials ”to label this a terrorist event.”
