Tuesday night’s horrific crash on Highway 400 south of Barrie is prompting calls for a coroner’s inquest.

Investigators say the deadly chain reaction fiery multi-vehicle crash was the result of a fuel tanker truck approaching narrowed lanes of traffic too quickly.

Ontario Safety League President Brian Patterson told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, his group will provide a formal request for a coroner’s inquest on Thursday.

“The coroner’s uniquely qualified to step back, call in the best and the brightest who provide him with advice and then to provide advice to the government that’s both impartial and has the best interests of the public in mind,” Patterson explained.

Patterson points to comments made yesterday by OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes, that there have been 69 fatalities to this point in the year linked to something involving commercial vehicles and private motor vehicles. He says it may be distraction or fatigue, but the coroner would find definitive answers.

A statement from the Ontario Trucking Association argues that there has been a 66 per cent decrease in the fatality rate of large truck collisions between 1995 and 2014.
