Most people don’t realize there is a link between alcohol consumption and cancer – a stat that prompted the American Society of Clinical Oncology to issue a new review of studies pointing to the known connection.
Around 3.5 per cent of all cancer deaths in the U.S. are attributable to drinking alcohol, with the greatest cancer risks being among moderate to heavy drinkers — and the more that a person drinks, the greater their risk of developing cancer.
Patients who continued to drink after a cancer diagnosis also tended to have longer hospitalizations, prolonged recovery, and even higher mortality.
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, also points out the risk of cancer drops back to that of non-drinkers if you stop drinking for 20 years or more.
