American-born Canadian author Michael Redhill has won the $100,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel “Bellevue Square.”

“Bellevue Square” is set in a park in Toronto’s Kensington Market area and features a women on the hunt for her doppelganger.  The jury praised the novel for its “complex literary wonders.”

“Bellevue Square” beat titles by Eden Robinson, Rachel Cusk, Ed O’Loughlin and Michelle Winters, who each picked up cheques for $10,000.

The Giller was established in 1994 by Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovitch in honour of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller.

Rabinovitch died in August at age 87 and was honoured at the start of the gala.
