A 1925 canvas by Group of Seven co-founder Lawren Harris went for $2.5 million at auction in Toronto last night meeting the minimum pre-sale estimate of $2.5 million to $3.5 million dollars. The hammer price does not include the auction house premium.  When that is added in, the sale tops $3 million.

“Mountains East of Maligne Lake was the feature sale at Heffel’s annual fall auction of Canadian art at Toronto’s Design Exchange.

The dramatic Rocky Mountain landscape depicts peaks near Jasper, Alberta, where Harris and A.Y. Jackson visited in 1924.

The oil-on-canvas painting was one of eight Harris artworks featured at the sale.

Last November, the 1926 Harris canvas “Mountain Forms” sold at auction for more than $11.2 million, more than double the record sale price for Canadian art set in 2002.
