More than 100 elected officials on both sides of the Canada-U-S border – are urging Ottawa to put a stop to the idea of building a nuclear-waste bunker near Lake Huron.
In their letter to Environment Minister Catherine McKenna – the officials say they speak for 16 million people – who want the Ontario Power Generation proposal cancelled.
104 officials signed the letter – and among them are mayors, wardens and reeves in Ontario – and states such as Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.
A covering note from Mayor Mike Bradley of Sarnia, Ontario says the message is clear – people do not want the bunker to be built.
But Ontario Power Generation says storing the waste underground at the Bruce nuclear power plant near Kincardine, Ontario would be perfectly safe.
The proposed storage site won tentative approval in May 2015.
Ottawa has delayed a final decision.
