A 63 year old Zanzibar-born, British based visual artist has become the oldest and first black woman to win the Turner Prize, the annual award named after English painter J. M. W. Turner.
Lubiana Himid was honoured for her work addressing racial politics and the legacy of slavery. The judges praised her “uncompromising tackling of issues including colonial history and how racism persists today.”.
The award comes with it a cash prize worth more than $43,000.
