The former Archbishop of Boston, who resigned in disgrace during the church sex abuse scandal in 2002, has died in Rome at the age of 86.
Bernard Law had been serving as arch-priest of the Papal Liberian Basilica at the Vatican.
The scandal that brought him down broke when it was revealed by the Boston Globe’s Spotlight investigative reporting team that Law and other bishops had covered for pedophile priests in the Boston Archdiocese.
Law apologized to victims of abuse by a priest who had been moved from parish to parish, despite Law knowing the priest had abused young boys.
The Boston Globe won a Pulitzer prize for its reportage and a 2015 movie about the scandal called “Spotlight,” won the 2016 Best Picture Academy Award.
