Flags at Toronto City Hall, Metro Hall, and the civic centres have been lowered and will remain at half-mast for one week after the passing of June Rowlands at the age of 93.
She was the first woman elected mayor of pre-amalgamation Toronto in 1991.

Current Mayor John Tory among the many who call her a trailblazer.
Rowlands’ term as mayor capped a long career in municipal politics that began as a city councillor in 1976.
In between she also served as budget chief and was the first woman TTC commissioner and chair of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Commission now known as the Police Services Board.
Residents can pay tribute through a book of condolences set up in the city hall rotunda next to flowers, a photograph and flags.
An online condolence book has been launched on the city’s website.
