A handful of people have already been scammed out of more than $5.1-million and Toronto police fear there are many more victims.
The landline phone scam works like this.

Imposters claiming to retailers, tell the person on the other end of the line that their credit card is being compromised and ask they hang up and call 9-1-1 or their bank.
But the victims are not aware the fraudsters appear to be using technology that allows them to remain on the line.
So instead of 9-1-1 or their bank, the victims are redirected to another imposter who gets them to transfer money to another account.
Toronto police say they fear there may be more victims because there’s evidence to indicate the scheme’s being carried out across the country.
