Postwar crooner Vic Damone has died from complications of respiratory failure.

He was 89.

For those Zoomers who grew up with the phonograph in their home, Damone’s velvet baritone was part of a soundtrack that also included Perry Como, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, who once said Damone had ”the best pipes in the business.”

After winning on the radio show ”Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” in 1947, Damone recorded some 2,500 songs over 54 years.

He had his own radio and TV shows, made movies and became a mainstay on the Vegas Strip.

One of his signature songs was ”On the Street Where You Live,” from ”My Fair Lady,” which hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Damone was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1997.
