Justin Trudeau says he’ll sit down next week with Liberal MP Randeep Sarai to discuss his invitation of convicted would-be assassin Jaspal Atwal to two receptions during the trip to India.
Atwal, a former member of a Sikh separatist group, convicted of the attempted murder of an Indian cabinet minister visiting Canada in 1986, attended one reception that the prime minister and his wife attended.
The other invite was later rescinded.
Trudeau says the situation was unacceptable.
”This individual should never have been invited,” said the prime minister.
”I will be having a conversation with that MP in Canada next week.”
Sarai has already taken blame for what happened.
If Atwal was not part of the official Canadian delegation, then how was he able to travel to India?
An unidentified senior government official with knowledge of the prime minister’s security protocols is suggesting rogue political elements in India may have been behind the embarrassing invitation in an attempt to make Ottawa appear sympathetic to Sikh extremism.
Meanwhile, in Ottawa the Conservatives are calling for an emergency meeting of the public safety and national security committee to review the Privy Council Office’s screening practices.
