Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has opened a formal investigation into reports of unauthorized access – and use of – Facebook user profiles.

Commissioner Daniel Therrien said in a release – “The first step will be to confirm with the company whether the personal information of Facebook users in Canada has been affected.”

Therrien’s investigation will examine Facebook’s compliance with Canada’s federal private sector privacy law – which is known as The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act .
