”The days of hydro or telephone or telecommunications trucks blocking lanes of traffic during the day for non-emergency work have to come to an end.”
And with those words Mayor John Tory explained a new policy that you may not have known went into effect March 1.
The policy prohibits utilities or their sub-contractors from doing any planned work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the area bounded by Dundas Street, Lake Shore Blvd / Harbour Street, Bathurst Street and Jarvis Street.
Work outside the area can be completed in lanes in the off-peak direction but must receive city approval.
There’s an exception for curb lanes where parking’s allowed, but, the work will only be allowed between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Tory says the policy follows ”extensive consultations” that have been conducted with utilities over the last several months.
