The number of public sector workers in Ontario who took home $100,000 or more in 2017 rose to almost 132,000.
That’s about 8,300 more than the year before.
The disclosure requirement applies to municipalities, school boards, hospitals, universities, colleges and many charities along with the provincial public service.
Topping the so-called ”Sunshine List” is Ontario Power Generation CEO Jeff Lyash who was paid $1,554,456.95.
The presidents and CEOs of the Hospital for Sick Children, the University Health Network, and Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care also made the top 10 salaries.
Premier Kathleen Wynne’s salary was $208,974 while former PC Leader Patrick Brown was paid $180,885.96 and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath’s salary last year was $158,157.96
Failed PC leadership candidate Christine Elliott made $203,543.30 as patient ombudsman for the Ontario Health Quality Council.
The $100,000 salary threshold has not changed to keep up with inflation since the ”Sunshine List” was brought in by the government of then-premier Mike Harris in 1996, when only 4,576 names were on it.
If the threshold had been adjusted, then it would be nearly $152,000, which would remove 85% of the number of employees on the list.
