As of today you don’t have to be near a radio or TV to receive emergency alerts.  Beginning this morning, life-threatening emergencies can now be broadcast on compatible mobile phones.

The National Public Alerting System, commonly called Alert Ready, is being extended to include wireless networks, in addition to traditional broadcast channels.

In the case of a life-threatening emergency, officials will send a localized alert that will compel compatible phones to emit the alarm and display a bilingual text warning.  Those warnings include threatening forest fires, Amber Alerts for missing children, terrorist threats and the like.

The CRTC, has authorized wireless carriers to conduct one test of the system during the week of May 6.
