Can Lit legend Margaret Atwood has touched off a debate about pop culture and its tendency to influence real life.
In an interview, the 78-year old Toronto author told Variety that she thinks the terrorists who orchestrated the World Trade Center attack in 2001 got the idea from the movie “Star Wars.”
Atwood cited a film reel in the opera version of “The Handmaid’s Tale” depicting the Twin Towers blowing up that was created a year before the attack and that may have given the 9-11 attackers the idea.
She says the only real difference is that in the movie the two guys who fly a plane into the middle of something and blow it up, get away.
