There’s good news and bad news on surgery wait times in Ontario.

A new survey from the Canadian Institute for Health Information says patients who need surgery for knee replacement and cataract removal are waiting longer, while wait times remain stable for hip fracture and hip replacement surgeries, and radiation therapy.

For knee replacement surgeries, 78 percent of patients in Ontario received the procedure within the recommended 6 month wait time last year, compared with 86 percent in 2015.

For cataract surgery, 69 percent of patients received the procedure within the recommended wait time of 16 weeks, compared with 74 percent in 2015.

For those who needed hip fracture repair, 86 percent received the procedure within the recommended 48 hours, unchanged from 2015.

As for hip replacement surgery, 83 percent of patients received the operation within the recommended wait time of 6 months last year, compared with 87 percent in 2015.

And 98 percent of patients in Ontario who had radiation therapy for cancer in 2017 received it within the recommended wait time of 28 days, compared with 99 percent in 2015.
