Saying the people have spoken and that he’s going to listen to them, Doug Ford now says the Greenbelt will remain as is.
”There have been a lot of voices saying that they don’t want to touch the Greenbelt. I govern through the people, I don’t govern through government.”
”The people have spoken – we won’t touch the greenbelt.”
He says the following wording will be included in the PC election platform.
”Increase the supply of affordable housing across the GTA while protecting the Greenbelt in its entirety.”
The U-turn comes the day after a cellphone video recording of the Tory leader saying he would open ”a big chunk” of the sensitive land around the western end of Lake Ontario for affordable housing.
Premier Kathleen Wynne and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath were critical of the initial plan.
The Greenbelt was protected from urban development by legislation in 2005.
