The Bank of Montreal and CIBC-owned Simplii Financial are warning customers that they’ve been the target of hackers and as many as 90,000 customers may have had their personal information stolen.
(CBC)
Simplii Financial was the first to warn that hackers had accessed the personal and financial information of over 40,000 customers.
CIBC received a tip on the weekend and after a preliminary investigation decided to go public.
Then, BMO revealed it had also received a tip that ”fraudsters” had stolen data on as many as 50,000 of its customers.
The bank says it appears the hackers were from outside Canada.
Royal Bank, Toronto-Dominion and Scotiabank say there’s nothing to indicate any of their customers have been affected.
