Police say evidence on scene, including a note to her 13-year-old daughter Frances that reportedly tells her that it was not her fault.
Her husband and business partner, Andy Spade, was home at the time.
The couple’s daughter was at school.
Spade, was an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine, when she launched her company with her husband in 1993.
She walked away from her namesake company in 2007, a year after it was acquired from the Neiman Marcus Group for $125-million by the company then known as Liz Claiborne Inc.
Coach bought the Kate Spade brand last year for $2.4-billion.
In 2016, Spade and her husband launched Frances Valentine, a new fashion line named after their daughter.
The designer even legally changed her name to Kate Valentine Spade to separate herself professionally from her old company.
