A campaign by the Heart and Stroke Foundation is showing how strokes can affect women differently than men.

Director Patrice Lindsay says a lot of women don’t realize they’re susceptible, and tend to focus on cancers and other diseases.

As the report outlines, 33 percent more women die from having a stroke than do their male counterparts, and women are 60 per cent less likely to regain their independence afterwards.

The foundation report also says fewer than half of stroke patients who participate in rehab programs are women.

Women are also less likely to return home after being treated and twice as many women as men go into long-term care following a stroke.
