The inquiry into long-term care has heard, if it had not been for the Ontario Nurses Association then Elizabeth Wettlaufer would have been fired years earlier.
That according to the top administrator at the Caressant Care nursing home in Woodstock, where the former nurse killed seven residents.
Brenda Van Quaethem testified that Wettlaufer was friendly but also often late, took long breaks and made many medication errors.
Asked by a lawyer, representing some of the victims’ families, if she would have fired Wettlaufer sooner had the ONA been taken out of the equation, the nursing home administrator said yes.
Instead, Wettlaufer was given multiple written and verbal warnings to avoid escalating her discipline to suspensions, which would have been grieved by the nurses association.
She was eventually fired and is now serving life sentence in prison for killing 8 residents and harming six others.
Meanwhile, Wettlaufer says she would not have been able to murder eight residents if more controls were in place on medication at long-term care homes.
The revelations come in a lengthy interview the former nurse gave to lawyers from the inquiry examining how she carried out her crimes.
A transcript of the lawyers’ interview with Wettlaufer was submitted as evidence.
