One of Donald Trump’s trade advisers, Peter Navarro, now says it was a ”mistake” to say that Justin Trudeau deserved to go to hell for his post-G7 summit remarks.
(Fox News)
The prime minister reiterated that Canada would retaliate against the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, promising Ottawa ”will not be pushed around” by its neighbour.
The president responded that Trudeau’s remarks were ”dishonest and weak”.
And with Trump off to Singapore for his summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, two of the president’s advisers went after Trudeau with Navarro’s remarks the strongest.
”There a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door,” said Navarro.
He now concedes he went to far.
”My job was to send a signal of strength.  The problem was that in conveying that message, I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message.  I own that.  That was my mistake, my words.”
