Finance Minister Bill Morneau was not in a conflict of interest when he introduced a pension bill last year while he still owned shares in the family business.
That decision from Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion.
”I found that he (Morneau) did not place himself in a conflict of interest in making decision leading to the introduction of Bill C-27, therefore he did not contravene … the Conflict of Interest Act,” Dion wrote in his decision, released Monday.
In a Facebook post, the finance minister thanked Dion’s office for ”their work and diligence.”
Opposition MPs claimed the bill would benefit his family’s company.
PC finance critic Pierre Poilievre calls the decision surprising,”but regardless of whether Minister Moreneau’s actions were illegal, they were definitely bad judgment.”
